Racing Roland
These are photos of the 750mm gauge line on the German island of Rügen: the Rasender Schmalspurbahn, or "Racing Roland". The main service is on the western section between Ostseebad Binz and Göhren, holiday resorts on the Baltic coast, serving the resort of Sellin on the way. This section is very busy and carries cycles in vans.
The other part of the line goes to Putbus, where the extensive loco yards are situated. Also here it meets the DB line from Bergen. Both lines continue on as dual gauge track to Lauterbach Mole. The western part of the line is reminiscent of the Isle of Man Steam Railway (with weather to match). The narrow gauge appearance of the line is rather spoilt by the heavy rails used - probably standard gauge size.
Map of Rügen:
The "Racing Roland" line is shown in red. The line once continued to Altefähr (near the bridge to Stralsund on the mainland), and there was also another isolated line to the northern part of the island. The closed lines are green on the map. This old map does not show the DB standard gauge line to Binz ("Bad Binz" on the map).
